Straight Sippin': Shrubs Cocktail Class with The Learning Kitchen at the Sweet Auburn Curb Market
Shrubs separate the adults from the kids in the cocktail world. Sure, sugary syrups bought from the store are convenient, but the taste of artificial cherry lollipops is a flavor profile that most of us grow past once we hit puberty. Shrubs provide relief to those of us that enjoy mixed drinks, but crave grown up flavors. In this workshop, you will learn the art of preparing shrubs in an easy to do at home way that will wow your taste-buds AND your real-buds.
What To Expect
- Learn all about shrubs, the best friend to any good cocktail or mixed drink.
- Enjoy tastings of various sweet and savory shrubs (cinnamon apple, cucumber lime, peach bourbon, dark cherry with peppercorn to name a few) prepared by Lyn, all while nibbling on yummy appetizers
- Create a couple cocktails or coolers to taste the glory of a drink made with shrubs
- Leave class with recipe, instructions & an actual jar of shrubs you make yourself
The Learning Kitchen offers hands-on classes geared to the home cook. Their mission is to bring together all generations for the purpose of learning and sharing wonderful traditions including canning, fermenting, bread baking, and more. The Learning Kitchen is warming our bodies and souls with this shrubs cocktail class this fall and winter!
Lyn, director of all things delish’ at The Learning Kitchen, fell in love with drinks mixed with shrubs when she tried a cocktail at a local restaurant way back when. For Lyn, sweet syrupy drinks are best left for little kid pizza parties. Thanks to shrubs, she found a way to make mixed drinks that had more adult flavor profiles. Since that first introduction, Lyn has mastered all things shrub and is probably somewhere right now posted up with a warming Dark Cherry Peppercorn Bourbon shrub cocktail.
In this class, Lyn will go over some of her learned techniques with shrubs. Like, do you do a cold or hot brew? Well, that depends on what flavor profiles you are looking for. Cold brew apple shrubs taste different than hot (think fresh tart raw apple versus more sweet baked apple pie). Lyn is an expert though and takes the time to tell you everything you never knew you needed to know about shrubs. She even tells you the origins of the name "shrubs!"
During the lesson comes the real fun because Lyn brings out bourbon, vodka, sparkling water, tonic and other fun drinks to pair with a selection of savory and sweet already prepared shrubs for some instant out of this world cocktails and coolers. She even has some scrumptious appetizers to nibble on throughout the lesson as well. After riding the flavor roller coaster ride, you will be asked to choose a favorite shrub to make yourself to enjoy at home later. Our favorite hands down was her cucumber based shrub that offered a more savory profile. Lyn then guides you through the art of concocting your first jar of shrubs, which will for sure land you beaucoup likes on your Instagram. Because, let’s be real, the whole point is to one-up all your snobby mixologist friends. Anyone can post a pic of a fancy drink made at some restaurant, but the best way to flex on social media is with something you made yourself.
