Tea is the second most popular beverage behind water in the world, but what do you really know about it besides sweet or unsweet? Resident tea expert Doria Roberts is taking you on a tour through the history, science and brewing techniques in this multi-course tutorial and tasting session at Tipple + Rose.
While they offer formal, reservations-only high teas, you can also come in at any time for a pot and some bites. Tipple + Rose is a tea shop just in the way you’d imagine a coffee spot: a place to grab a pot of tea, some light bites and hang out. And no tea time would be complete without a little something sweet, for which they offer Honeysuckle ice cream in flavors like London Fog (reminiscent of your Earl Grey tea), cakes by Southern Sweets, colorful macarons and scones. Have a tea lover in your life? You'll also find unique gifts like tea sets or accessories, bulk spices, handmade soaps and loose leaf tea for home. No need to brave the mall or big chains—it’s all right here in the Virginia Highlands.
Doria, who is studying to become a certified tea sommelier, is extensively covering the basics in this tea 101 course. You’ll leave with all sorts of trivia and pragmatic facts like how many people consume tea, the differences between the many varieties, and how to brew it best. Example: want a stronger flavor? Use more tea rather than steep it longer, because of longer steeping results in an unpleasant bitter taste. You’ll taste white, green, black, oolong and pu-erh teas expertly paired with food for each course. Alongside the tasting, you’ll also get a sample of tea leaves and a starter kit to bag your own teas at home.
