Now, this here is date night taken to new heights: a sky-high Ferris wheel ride, followed by juicy burgers and hot cocoa just a stone's throw away at one of our favorite Downtown haunts. Does it get any better than this? Actually, it does. (Did we mention there's booze in said cocoa?)
We interrupt your regularly scheduled Netflix-and-takeout-on-the-couch programming to bring you breaking news: date night just got a major upgrade. We're talking adventure, romance, sweeping vistas and whiskey-spiked hot cocoas, not to mention canoodling opportunities aplenty. Yes, it's true: our sky-high date night aboard Atlanta's 20-story Ferris wheel is back. And this time, burgers and booze are involved.
Inside a glass-enclosed (and, ahem, climate-controlled) Skyview gondola, you'll soar above Centennial Park and watch the Downtown cityscape give way to breathtaking views of the city. Kind of like going to the fair as a child, only with more scenic vistas and far fewer carnies.
Once your feet are back on solid ground, you'll stroll over to one of our very favorite Downtown haunts: Park Bar, located less than a hundred yards away from the base of the Ferris wheel. Thanks to their delightfully juicy, messy burgers, love for craft beer, top-notch treasury of bourbon and overall laid-back vibe, Park Bar happens to be one of our very favorite places to park it in Downtown. Your post-Skyview supping will include the most beloved and popular appetizer on the menu: plantains fried to a golden crisp, slathered in melted pimento cheese and topped with bacon. They call 'em Cheesy Banana Boats; we call 'em downright addictive—and a perfect prelude to the rest of Park Bar's menu.
With the entirety of the (newly revamped) specialty burger menu at your fingertips, it may be difficult to choose a plan of attack. Allow us to help. The Cuban Frita, made with both Brasstown beef and chorizo, is unlike any other burger we've tried in Atlanta—partially due to the rather genius addition of crispy potato sticks that provide a perfect crunch. The Bison Blue, which combines chipotle bison with Blue Jack cheese and sauteed mushrooms, is a brand-new addition and already an instant crowd favorite. And, though not an actual burger per se, the High Line Pastrami & Swiss is a longstanding favorite from the specials menu that's made a much-heralded return to the permanent menu, for good reason. Namely, because it makes other bars' wimpy pastramis shake in their rye-slices.
And as for the proverbial cherry atop this evening? Look no further than the bar of this fine institution, where boozy hot chocolates and adult milkshakes await you and your dining cohort. Indulge in a piping-hot mug of Fluff-a-Nutter Cocoa (spiked with marshmallow vodka and hazelnut liqueur), or the peppermint schnapps-infused Hot Mint, or any of the other liquid-dessert specials that Park Bar dreams up. Cozy up, hunker down, and enjoy a good old-fashioned date night done right. (We don't think you'll miss that Netflix queue.)
