Get ready to taste some of Atlanta’s most unique local brews at Second Self Beer Company. After an interactive tour to see how the good stuff is made, you can kick back and relax with six tastings of your choice in their awesome new tap room.
Chris Doyle and Jason Santamaria started brewing beer together when they were students at Georgia Tech. After graduating, they entered the corporate world, but the home brewing continued on nights and weekends. In the solitude of these late night sessions, brewing beer provided an alter ego of sorts for the two friends – a “second self” in which to escape from the pressures of their careers. A decade later, what started as a hobby has transformed into a full-time business, in the form of Second Self Beer Company. At Second Self, Chris and Jason encourage their customers to leave the stress of life behind and ‘sip into your second self’ – an identity that’s all about fun, relaxation, and great beer.
Walk into Second Self’s Westside brewery and you’ll always find their flagship beers on tap. This includes Chris and Jason’s oldest recipe, Red Hop Rye, which combines citrusy hops with spicy rye flavors and a malty backbone for a perfectly balanced and unique IPA. On the lighter side of the spectrum is Thai Wheat, Second Self’s flagship American Wheat Ale. Back in their home-brewing days this is the beer that the founders made the most of. The reason? They and their friends couldn’t stop drinking it! It seems that the same is true of the general public, because Thai Wheat continues to be Second Self’s biggest seller. Inspired by a trip to Thailand, this brew uses fresh ginger and locally farmed lemongrass to pack a spicy and exotic punch that always keeps us coming back for more.
When it comes to the brewing process, the team at Second Self are master tinkerers, so in addition to the year round offerings, there are always new limited releases and experimental beers on tap too. If you go soon, you might be able to snag some Funky Mole Porter, which adds wild yeasts to the flagship chile-cinnamon porter. Or you can expand your palate by trying an experimental barrel-aged Red Hop recipe.
Once you’ve got a beer in your hand, it’ll be time to take a tour through Second Self’s unique facility (fun fact: the building used to be a potato salad factory for Hooters), during which you’ll learn all about the brewery’s history and get to take an interactive journey through the brewing process. When the tour’s over, grab your crew for a game of corn hole, or choose from one of the many board games available in the taproom. The brewery’s tour hours are also packed with special events. The last Monday of every month is comedy night, with a two-hour show featuring local and touring stand-up comics. On weekends, Second Self often features live music or screens college football and movies in the taproom. Luckily, the fun won’t end when the brewery closes. Before you leave, you’ll get to take home a Maverick & Gose and bring a little taste of the Second Self experience home with you!
