The fine folks behind the bar at The Pinewood are total pros when it comes to slingin drinks, and starting in April, they’ll be passing some of that expertise on to us. The Pinewood has offered whiskey classes in the past, but this spring the Decatur cocktail bar is unveiling a brand new series of cocktail classes, each of which will focus on a different spirit. Dubbed the “College of Cocktails,” these courses will be the perfect mix of fun and education, which pretty much describes the college experience to a tee. Each class will dive deep into four classic cocktails that feature that week’s spirit. And for the first class, as Atlanta continues to shift into spring, what better way to welcome the warm weather than by learning about some timeless and tropical rum libations? The subsequent weeks will explore drinks made with gin, bourbon, rye whiskey, vodka and tequilla.
When you arrive at The Pinewood for College of Cocktails you’ll be greeted with a signature Pinewood drink made with that class’ liquor of focus. The cocktail will be something fun and unique, like an Old Cuban, a take on a mojito mixed with a French 75. Once you’ve enjoyed your welcome cocktail, you and your classmates will move into The Pinewood’s newly expanded private dining area, where you’ll immediately jump into the world of classic cocktails. Beverage Director Julian and his staff have intentionally decided to focus on timeless drinks that have stood the test of time and are never out of style. In the rum class, for example, you’ll learn the ins and outs of the Daiquiri, Mojito, and Mai Tai.
During the course, you’ll be walked through the history of each cocktail, how they are made, and most importantly, how they taste. After demonstrating how to make each cocktail, your instructor – one of The Pinewood’s stellar bar staff – will serve you sample portions to sip on, now equipped with some newly acquired knowledge to apply to your tasting experience. While you’ll certainly learn a lot, College of Cocktails is designed to be more of a fun hangout with like-minded spirit lovers than a didactic lecture. The communal vibe of the class makes it perfect for a fun date night or as a unique outing with a group of friends. Also, once you’ve worked up an appetite from all that drinking and learning, you’ll be treated to a few of The Pinewood’s signature small plates – we’re talkin grit tots, Brussels sprouts, and sliders y’all. If you’re interested in learning more about cocktails or gaining a better understanding of your favorite spirit, but aren’t in the mood to be lectured, then College of Cocktails is just the thing for you!
