Enjoy the 2018 Winter Olympics? And we all know the most adrenaline pumping sport to in the Winter Olympics is the edge of your seat action found in Curling
. All that being said, here's a news flash folks, curling doesn’t only belong in the winter Olympics. Yessir, even down here in the dirty south there’s a vibrant community of ice-bound athletes keeping this unique sport alive and thriving. Curling is best described as a combination of shuffleboard, bocce, and chess on ice. The gameplay of shuffleboard, the scoring system of bocce, and the strategy of chess all come together to create a true one-of-a-kind wintertime sport in which players slide – or ‘throw’ – large granite stones across a sheet of ice towards a target, and their teammates sweep the ice in front of the traveling stone to manipulate its trajectory. If you’ve ever dreamed of hitting the ice yourself, then you’re in luck, because we’ve got your ticket to an intro class with the Peachtree Curling Association, at their official AF facility in Marietta.
The Peachtree Curling Association was founded in 2015 and consists of several members of all ages who participate in weekly practices, pickup games, and league play. The 90-minute beginner classes are taught by certified level one instructors and serve as a great introduction to this unique and addictive team sport. Here’s what to expect:
Also, take note, all you Hand-Pickers, this year we are in the midst of post-Olympian level mania after the USA men won gold. Think of this curling experience as a rare way to participate in the Olympics (on some level at least…) or prepare for the future, while watching the pro’s at the same time!
Oh, and did we mention that you have the chance to train with a world champion Olympic champion? On October 19th, Jessica Schultz will be leading this class to the delight of sweepers everywhere. Jessica Schultz is a two-time Olympian representing the United States at the 2006 Torino Games and the 2014 Games in Sochi. She is a world silver medalist, three-time U.S. Women’s National Champion, and Mixed Doubles NationalChampion just to name a few. Jess currently lives in Anchorage, AK where she hopes to grow the sport of curling. She loves sharing her passion for the sport and growing the game across the country.
First, your instructor will give you and your classmates a quick 5-minute overview of the sport and its history, which dates back to medieval Scotland. Then you’ll hit the ice and do some stretching and balance exercise. From there you’ll learn a variety of throwing and sweeping techniques used in a typical game. Once you’re trained up, you and your classmates will put your new skills to the test and play a short game against each other. At the end of the lesson, you’ll get to participate in broom stacking, the curling tradition of sharing a post-game drink with your teammates. While the intro class focuses on basic technique, you can return for a 201 Level Class and start to hone your strategy even more! If you really get hooked – most people do – then you can become a member, join a team, and start competing in a league!
