Irina Burlack’s studio in the Old 4th Ward is a stone’s throw from the Beltline and has an enticingly mellow and comfortable atmosphere - it almost feels like we're doing yoga in the comfort of our own home.
It’s not often we meet someone who’s been doing yoga since they were a young child. Sure, there are the teachers who got into it in their ‘20s, even folks who discovered the benefits of a well-executed compass pose in college, but to find someone who’s been working on their wheel pose since they were five is a true find, indeed. So you can imagine our glee when meeting Irina Burlack, owner of IB Yoga & Barre. As a child in Russia, she had boundless energy, and her father would challenge her to hold still for as long as she could. She often found herself bent backwards over chairs or standing with one leg in the air for minutes on end, finally wearing herself out by the end of the day. And thank goodness for the early introduction- Irina is not only a yogi, but has plenty of other ways to get us moving and mindful.
After teaching yoga in studios all over northern OTP, and even opening her own studio in Alpharetta, she felt the pull of the city. It was important to Irina to find a live/work space because she didn’t want to have to deal with Atlanta traffic every day. And who can blame her? How’s she gonna get you relaxed after sitting in stressful traffic all morning? So now Irina is living the dream- she can walk right downstairs from her loft to her studio and dive right into the poses of the day. Her studio in the Old 4th Ward is a stone’s throw from the Beltline and has an enticingly mellow and comfortable atmosphere - it almost feels like we're doing yoga in the comfort of our own home. There are no mirrors, no judgement, and no worries about what we look like. Irina created a space that makes us feel relaxed, like a retreat from our hectic life.
Now, we’ve all been in fitness classes where we felt like cattle squeezed in tight, bumping into each other and jockeying for the front row. But in Irina’s classes, there are only six students at a time. Yes, you read that right- these semi-private classes are beginner friendly and give you plenty of room for one on one attention. Irina’s yoga classes are open-level Vinyasa flow, or choose IB Chill for restorative yoga using straps, blocks, blankets, and bolsters to hold gentle stretching poses. Irina is also certified in barre, and the classes combine techniques of ballet barre, Pilates core work, and yoga stretches to get that lean look. If you’re looking for something a little more intense, IB Fit is a total body workout, based on the BodyART Fitness philosophy of Robert Steinbacher (yep, that’s the same workout Madonna does to keep svelte and stunning year after year.) One of our favorite things about Irina’s classes though, is the relaxation. At the end of every class, whether it’s yoga, barre or fit, you're treated to a savasana-style relaxation with lavender oil - and chilled washcloths for the IB Fit classes - and a shoulder press. This is a hands-on Thai massage technique (Irina's certified in Thai massage, too!) that leaves you feeling relaxed and refreshed. Because everyone deserves to be pampered after working hard.
