Despite the fact that incorporating yoga in our day-to-day comes along with about a bazillion perks – an overall sense of well-being, greater focus, and better health among 'em – practicing regularly can be pretty hard. Not only does the thought of going out in public in our stretchy pants send us straight into fetal position (er, child’s pose?), but trying to figure out how to fit it to our daily lives is kind of stressful. Elsie and John Irvin, the owners of Highland Yoga, totally get it. You see… they’re both lawyers. They're practically walking case studies on why making yoga a part of your daily regimen will do you worlds of good.
“Overworked professionals could really benefit from it.” Elsie speaks of her practice. “I discovered yoga when I was in law school, it’s enriched my life in so many ways.” The stunning Highland space is tucked away behind American Roadhouse, well away from the bustling street ahead. Their new Grant Park location has a peaceful, cozy neighborhood vibe. Stepping inside the studio fills us with instant relief, and after class the woes that had been wearing us down seem infinitely lighter. The studio’s focus is in vinyasa flow, a more fluid, creative practice than most. Sure, there’s a bit of a cardio element to it, but you’ll also leave with the full satisfaction of having mastered a pose that you couldn’t do when you waltzed in. These are classes that incorporate the sun salutations and work their way towards an apex pose – it’s not just about striking crow pose and getting out of it.
What we like most about Highland Yoga is that it’s a space where newbs can practice freely and comfortably alongside Vinyasa vets. “We make sure to offer a lot of modifications for each pose, so our students can tailor their practice for their skill level,” Elsie tells us. Those kinds of options cast a wide net on would-be yogis – they’ve got a broad range of students strolling in and out of their studio. We like to think of Highland Yoga as a place for gathering, not just like-minded folks looking to get a little exercise before the day’s end, but for gathering ourselves in the midst of our frenetic lives. And the kind of presence that brings? It’s worth making time for.
