Ladies and gents, don your hats and ready the seersucker ‘cause it’s Derby time. But forget about traveling; come celebrate the season right here in ATL with H. Harper Station owner/mixologist/master of all things Louisville, Jerry Slater, who’s whipping up an afternoon of bourbon, live music, a Kentucky buffet and more.
If you’re like the majority of us who won’t be making it to Churchill Downs this year, yet still want to revel in the Derby and all its springtime celebratory glory, here’s your best Atlanta-bound option: A party hosted by H. Harper’s owner/master mixologist, Jerry Slater, who just so happens to have earned his expertise running the restaurants at Louisville's famed Seelbach Hotel for over a decade. Turns out, he’s not only Atlanta’s favorite classic cocktail maker, but also our very own Ambassador of All Things Kentucky, at least in our eyes.
Saturday’s shindig starts at 3 p.m. and will go ‘til that winning equine makes its victory lap (the race starts right around 6 p.m.). While you're not talking to your bookie about your winning trifecta bet, enjoy several Louisville-approved pastimes: sip on Mint Juleps, Old Fashioneds and other Derby-inspired drinks; nibble on a full Kentucky-style buffet of hot brown
and Derby Pie; play cornhole; and win prizes for the most dapper-dressed gentleman or mad-hatted lady (seriously, girls, don't forget to display your most fierce haberdashery skills!). And, of course, if you actually want to watch the race, there'll be a big-screen TV. After all, how else will you find out the horse with four legs won? Giddy-up!
