We know you enjoy rolling up your sleeves for a DIY decor project, but how often do you get to make wearables for your wardrobe? The creative ladies behind Garage Door will lead you in a session of leather cuttin' and metal stampin' (and, if you so desire, a little wine sippin') to fashion a new accessory that you can proudly show off every time you leave the house.
We’ll always jump at the chance to get into a new DIY project, and ending up with something to complement our sartorial statements will send us into absolute fits. Thanks to the crafty ladies of Garage Door Studio, we get to dive into learning leather jewelry making AND metal stamping—the skills that keep on skillin'. Jen, Patty, Lou and Rachel are doing their part to keep Avondale Estates artistic at Garage Door Studio. Their collective boutique and creation space was born out of a conversation between the four artists who live in Avondale and had worked together at festivals for a decade. That conversation basically went like this: “Why not open a boutique in downtown Avondale?” They started serious work on it in January of 2014, signed a lease three months later, and in October of that year, opened their doors. Garage Door Studio features about 60 local artists in the boutique, and the partners also use their skills to teach classes year-round. Not only is Garage Door Studio bringing art to Avondale Estates, it’s helping the community expand its creative horizons and increase creative thinking skills—we’ll always applaud that. And the best part? Their motto is “We’re making this up as we go along.”
Walking in the door just makes us feel better about life. Those ladies must be using some sort of magic on their space; it’s the genuine article in there. You’ll get to experience it for yourself when you head over to try your hand at building leather beaded bracelets. They’ll teach you everything you need to know and you’ll leave this class with a whole new skill: stamping metal. Nimble-fingered jewelers in training will be working with earth elements including leather, metal and colorful gemstones like turquoise, coral, hematite, jade and citrine. For our animal lovers, vegan leather is available. And if we know anything about art, we know that it goes great with wine and sweets. Garage Door Studio invites you and your crafting cohorts to BYOW (bring your own wine) and they'll be supplying sweets from Icing Cake Design & Sweets Boutique, located just around the corner. We’ve heard their whoopie pies are enough to garner a “whoop-de-doo!” So let’s recap: Wine. Sweets. Leather. Metal. Stones. Sounds like the makings for a memorable weekend, if you ask us.
