A quick history lesson for ya, scouts: way back in May 1917, a catastrophic fire ripped through Atlanta's Fourth Ward, destroying over 300 acres of property and 1,900 structures. The 10-hour fire started near Dekalb Avenue and spread north up Boulevard, just passing Ponce before it was finally extinguished. The fire was so wild and so ravenous that firefighters on the scene eventually used dynamite to blow up houses to prevent the fire's spread from building to building.
Now fast-forward to present-day HOTlanta, where May will mark the 100th anniversary of that Great Atlanta Fire, as well as the 3rd annual Fire in the Fourth celebration. The Old Fourth Ward Business Association started the Fire in the Fourth festival as an opportunity to celebrate the neighborhood's heritage of resilience and straight-up awesomeness almost a century after that fiery fiasco. All proceeds from this event go towards the Old Fourth Ward Business Association, who use every cent to keep the Old Fourth Ward safe, sustainable, and darn good-lookin'.
Fire in the Fourth, which happens along Edgewood and Auburn Ave, features all of your favorite festival shenanigans (e.g. live music! performance! art! food!) with a focus on flamed-themed attractions such as fire dancers, glass blowers, and fire games. This year Edgewood Avenue will feature non-stop performances, live music, and interactions. The main (historical) attraction will be the "The 100 Year History of Boulevard" installation featuring the history of our iconic street through historical images, stories, and interactions. Auburn Avenue will feature kid's activities by Kindezi School, Operation PEACE and Moving in the Spirit. (The beloved fire trucks and puppet show will return with a new educational smokehouse from the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department.)
Fire in the Fourth would not be the same without The Imperial OPA and their multi-talented circus performers interacting with everyone throughout the event. Also expect Janke Glass Blowing demonstrations, Out of Hand's 25-foot Resurgens puppet, a community chalk mural, and cornhole tournaments (of course). Tunes will be provided by local bands and Soul Food Cypher on the main stage. AND returning for another fiery finish is the Circus Combustus fire troupe with two hours of non-stop fire performances starting at 9 PM. You can even play fire skeeball game in the Fire Gallery!
And we've saved the best for last: the Fire in the Fourth Total View VIP package that grants you access to even more festival goodness along with local bites and brews. You'll enjoy local craft brews by Creature Comforts and Arches Brewing, custom cocktails featuring Tito's Handmade Vodka and a catered buffet by Bone Lick BBQ. VIP Ticket holders will enjoy the entire festival and have access to exclusive elevated hangouts on Edgewood Avenue, indoor restrooms and shaded seating too.
But don't dilly-dally, scouts. This $45 early bird price flies away on May 1. Beginning May 1st, the VIP pass will be $60 and then go up to $70 on the day of the event.
