If you know where to look, there are some really incredible quality Sichuan eats being stirred up, fried, and served in this city. (And no, we’re not referring to the late night drunken temptation of Burger Win. That’s not even close to the real thing.) At the center of it all is the wonderment known as The Chinatown Mall – a spot filled with vendors of every corner of Chinese cuisine, roasting ducks and serving up hot pots on the regular. Culinary adventurers have long explored the tantalizing and delicious temptations of the foodcourt – and in the center of all the delectable commotion is the O.G. of Atlanta’s Sichuan eateries itself: Chong Qing Hot Pot.
Nestled in the center of the food court’s varied delights, Chong Qing Hot Pot is the kind of no-frills, no-nonsense establishment that keeps its eyes on the prize: serving up authentic Sichuan eats to hungry Atlantans. And the husband and wife duo behind it is no-holds-barred on their mission; the menu here has all the stops, with fifteen different sections sporting everything from hot and spicy pots, light soups, vegetables, seafood, and soy products. Those whose tastebuds are teeming with wanderlust will have a lot of territory to taste, which is precisely why we can’t get our fill of it.
Hot, sour, pungent, salty, sweet and full of flavors and textures alien from our jejune western palettes, Sichuan cuisine has the capability to enliven our imaginations and our palettes. The hot and tongue-numbing Spicy Chicken comes served up steaming and piled high with dried chilis and freshly fried morsels of chicken. Bubbling broths of regularly rotating soups are available in unlimited quantities. And there are tamer yet equally diverse flavors for those of us who are more faint of tongue as well. We’re pretty fond of the baby bok choy and mushrooms are full of more mild tasty delights. You and your adventurous dining companion will have your pick of the endless variety of entrées on the menu. (Oh and don’t be worried – the menu on the wall may be 100% in Chinese script, but they’ve got a dual language menu at the counter for perusing as well.) Oh, and of course you’ll have bottomless cups of hot green tea and endless portions of fresh soups and fluffy white rice at your disposal as well, because – trust us – you’re going to want this meal to last.
