A good intermission is quite the rarity these days. (And no, we’re not referring to those times amidst a play allotted for bathroom breaks.) We’re talking real interludes – freewheeling, carefree moments that aren’t confined by the hands of a watch and forget about groceries, bills and our heaping piles of laundry. Those kind of moments? They’re Café Intermezzo’s forté (their name does mean “intermission” after all). Their Midtown and Dunwoody location has been offering us a safe haven from our day-to-day lives since they first opened up. With its elegant surroundings, crystal chandeliers, and turn of the 19th-century European decor – the café is comforting and then some. (We would hunker down at its large wrap-around bar for eternity if we could – honest.)
Owner Brian fell in love with the idea of European coffeehouses whilst travelling through Germany and Austria in the early 70s. And at Café Intermezzo, which opened its first location in 1979, he hoped to recreate the 250-year-old concept of the Austrian Coffeehouse. In Europe, Brian explained, he noticed people would stop to hang out at their table and enjoy a fine European espresso, alongside a pastry or two–just relaxing. To that, he added a full-service bar and kitchen. (That means breakfast, folks.) And after spending a short while in the warm environs of Café Intermezzo, you'll notice that people are lingering, laughing and stuffing their faces–gracefully, of course. Ahh, just like the homeland.
With locations conveniently located at 11th & Peachtree, Dunwoody across from Perimeter Mall, and soon to open at Avalon in Alpharetta, you are sure to find a location near you. Brian has enjoyed seeing the old-world Café Intermezzo charm set up next to the sleek modern buildings that pepper the area. It’s certainly a picturesque place to kick-off the day with a full breakfast (and subsequently, stomach). You and one brunching buddy of your choosing will have your pick of the breakfast entrees. Dishes range from the scrumptious sweet French toast to the savory Croque Madame (mushrooms, spinach, gooey cheese and an egg, all couched in one of their homemade croissants). And naturally, the victuals are meant to be savored with softly playing, classical tunes in the air, as well as a couple of handmade coffee beverages, chosen from a hefty, booklet-sized drink menu. We’re big fans of the café’s signature drink – the Caffé Intermezzo – which intermingles essences of almond and coca flavors. If you’re on the hunt for something sweeter, we’re big fans of the chocolatey and decadent Caffé Mozart, which comes complete with a dollop of fresh Schlag (that's whipped cream). Dab the foam off the corners of your mouth with the cloth napkin, and grin. This is a meal to sip and savor. Folks, let's make breakfasting a break again.Note: Breakfast is served all day from morning to late night. Offer hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., 7 days per week.
