Atwoods serves made-to-order pizzas, not slices, because as Chef Rob Phillip says, they don’t serve leftovers. And this isn’t your typical pizza—their Neapolitan-style is built on the foundation of delicious artisanal crust which makes it like the best of both American and Italian pizza: tough enough to be picked up but still tender like a traditional Neapolitan. Starting with Caputo’s flour, they combine this higher-protein flour blend (which is what gives the pizza its perfect durability) and a little bit of yeast to make a poolish. Then, this housemade dough gets to ferment for a full 48 hours before hitting the flames of an Italian-born, rotating stone oven. Pretty fancy, right?
It doesn’t stop with the dough, though. They source their toppings carefully and from both domestic and international sources. For Atwoods, quality matters. If the best Calabrian salami must come Italy, they get it from Italy. And if there is a cheese that’s best out of Wisconsin, it'll come from Wisconsin. They have a solid meatball recipe, so those are made in-house. And this summer, they’re planning to partner up with some of our favorite Atlanta breweries, so you can feel confident you’re always getting the best.
Now, their dough and toppings may lead a life of luxury, but don’t be intimidated. Atwoods itself is a casual, relaxed atmosphere with a cool industrial look of cement and exposed brick. The community high-top seating and outdoor patio are prime for groups or a low-key date night. Located in Midtown between apartment complexes and offices, they’re open for breakfast (good morning, fresh pastries, house made granola and cups of Jittery Joe’s), lunch and dinner. Your deal includes any one of their large pizzas, two side salads and your choice of a bottle of wine or pitcher of beer. This truly is the sweet life.
