Atlanta is always down for some hometown heroes to support, right? And this time of year is perfect to cheer our favorite hometown champs, the Atlanta Rollergirls. We know what you're thinking- roller derby? Isn't that fake like wrestling? We can understand why you would think that, given the history of roller derby in America. But what if we told you it’s not about fake jabs to the face and choreographed fights, but instead is all about tough as nails women, training their hineys off, battling it out for Atlanta (and the world) domination? If you haven’t seen these ladies juking, diving, racing and stomping all over their opponents yet, you’re welcome because this is the last game of the season. Brutal monikers like Queen Loseyateefa, Wild Cherri and Baller Shot Caller mixed with tough competition, fierce and furious gameplay, AND a championship on the line? Where do we sign up? (Right here, actually.) And the Atlanta Rollergirls are some of the best in the nation- so good in fact, they’re skating at a national-level tournament and are getting the whole community involved (including art by Catlanta) to help get them there.
Atlanta's home teams, the Denim Demons, Toxic Shocks, Apocalypstix and Glamma Rays, have been competing against each other all season long, and these doubleheaders are the culmination of all that hard work. Another roller derby fun fact: the Apocalypstix won last year's championship, so they’re hungry for more. For a little taste of the action, check out this recap from earlier in the season:
