Jammin' Jams and Partyin' Pickles: Summer Preserving Workshop at The Learning Kitchen
We have all heard the classic saying, “give a person some jam and they snack for a day; teach a person to jam and you feed them for a lifetime.” Ok, to be honest we were inspired to update that tired old adage, thanks to The Learning Kitchen’s new fun Summer Preserving Workshop!
What To Expect
- Learn all about preserving, with a focus on pickled peppers and tomato jam
- Enjoy tastings of Lyn's gourmet preserves (she has everything from savory to sweet and more)
- Soak up tons of knowledge so that you can keep your pantry stocked with homemade goodness instead of macaroni in a blue box...
- Leave the class with recipe, instructions & actual jars of preserves you make yourself
The Learning Kitchen offers hands-on classes geared to the home cook. Their mission is to bring together all generations for the purpose of learning and sharing wonderful traditions including canning, fermenting, bread baking, and more. This time around, Lyn of The Learning Kitchen is offering a Summer Preserving Workshop with pickled peppers and tomato jam!
Lyn is an OG in the preserving world. To hear her background in preserving will make you quickly realize you she has canned more than you will ever know, “Lyn has completed coursework and been awarded a Certificate of Master Preserver from Cornell University Extension Service based in Ithaca, New York. She has completed additional coursework in food science at the University of Georgia. As a requirement for processing and selling low-acids foods (such as pickles and salsas), she has also completed the University of Georgia “Better Process Control School” training and subsequently received certification as awarded by UGA and the Georgia State Department of Agriculture.”
Long story short, there is no one else we know that is more apt to guide you through the journey of becoming a canning champion (be honest, do you know anyone else with so many canning accolades?!). For this workshop, Lyn will show you how to preserve your own pickled peppers and tomato jam. You will have the option to choose mild, hot or a combination of both for your pickled peppers. Personally, we like that heat, but the combo makes for a great universal pleaser. As far as the tomato jam goes, Lyn knows how to concoct the perfect blend of sweet and savory. According to Lyn, “Often I take my tomato jam for potlucks, on a tray with crostini or multi-grain crackers and goat cheese. I find there’s never any left to take home! And it’s superb for quick lunches during my day, too. Also, I’ve found it a great rub for grilling pork or other meats, or coating pork roasts before placing in a roaster.”
As always with Lyn’s workshops, you will find yourself gleaning The Learning Kitchen’s wisdom in a way that is somehow easy enough to duplicate again at home all while nibbling on tasty treats. The snacking while learning mixed in with Lyn’s fun vibes makes for one of the unique hands-on kitchen experiences that a Scout could ever hope for!
