Your tour guide serves up an assortment of modern Southern foods with a big side plate of history.
We’re not afraid to admit when we’re wrong. We thought we knew it all. We thought we had seen every corner of the city, heard every story and tasted every delicious drop of Southern delicacy out there. But we love being surprised—Atlanta Food Walks took us to places we’ve never been in the Grant Park neighborhood and told us stories of our city we've never heard.
Years ago, owner Akila McConnell was a practicing lawyer, but she heard the call of her favorite thing- delicious food. So she quit her lawyerly ways, picked up a food and travel blog, and the rest is history. And she knows a lot about history, by the way. She began giving tours of Atlanta in 2015 as a way to showcase the best of the different foods in the Southern tradition. Today, Atlanta Food Walks has six amazing food tour guides who live, work, and play in Atlanta and love showing it off to visitors and locals.
The tour kicks off at Six Feet Under where guests will try a modern take on shrimp and grits and fried catfish with cucumber wasabi soy sauce. Next up, the tour heads over to Augustine's for one of the best sandwiches in the city --- no, we're not even going to spoil this one for you. A meandering jaunt through Oakland Cemetery, with a focus on the "residents" who loved food, leads you to My Friend's Growler Shop for a beer, cider, and soda tasting. The tour wraps up at Republic Social House for some Nashville hot chicken and on to Little Tart Bakeshop for their decadent galettes and raspberry hibiscus meringues topped with Beautiful Briny Sea hibiscus sugar.
