The Atlanta Ballet is entering an exciting new season in every sense of the word. Not only do they have a brand new artistic director, but the company has also unveiled a new March program featuring three never before seen works. Gennadi Nedvigin is a classically trained dancer who retired in 2016 after a two-decade career as principal dancer with the San Francisco Ballet. As only the 4th artistic director in the company’s 87-year history, Gennadi is leading the Atlanta Ballet into an exhilarating new era. He was appointed in July of last year, but the upcoming March program – appropriately titled Gennadi’s Choice – will be the first show consisting completely of works handpicked by Gennadi himself.
If you’re unfamiliar with ballet, then consider Gennadi’s Choice your introduction to the fundamental appeal of this classical art form. Each of the three works in the program – which will be performed at the Cobb Energy Center - is representative of the beauty, technique, and style that form the basis of quintessential classical ballet.
The first work in the program - the 19th-century classic titled Paquita is choreographed by Marius Petipa who is widely considered to be the grandfather of classical ballet, and features beautifully simple choreography with male and female dancers that will serve as an ideal ballet primer for the unfamiliar spectator. This will be followed by the world premiere of Denouement, a piece by American Theater Ballet Dancer Gemma Bond which showcases the natural sexiness that exists at the core of classical ballet. The performance features six coupled dancers with piano and cello accompaniment. Together, these three performances will serve as the ultimate entry into the world of classical ballet and to the Atlanta Ballet’s new artistic vision. Finally, Gennadi’s Choice will conclude with Vespertine, a new piece by rising choreographic star Liam Scarlett, who has made a name for himself by combining the traditional elements of classical ballet with experimental contemporary dance techniques..
As if all that isn’t enough to entice you, our handpicked access also includes an exclusive preshow cocktail party! The Atlanta Ballet Night Out party will include premium cocktails, house wine and beer, light bites, and the chance to rub elbows with your peers. The preshow get together is in partnership with the Atlanta Ballet Young Professionals Group, so there will be plenty of like-minded young arts enthusiasts around to answer your questions and serve as a sounding board as you jump into the world of ballet.
Whether you’re a ballet neophyte looking for a crash course in dance appreciation or you’re a lifelong Atlanta Ballet fan hoping to snag a first look at the company’s new direction, a night out at Gennadi’s Choice will invigorate your love for the ballet like nothing else.
